POLITICS
I’ll probably tweet this if I can distill it to 140 characters so I pre-apologize if anyone has to read this twice (or once for that matter.)
The fact that all sides of a political debate can usually argue that Jesus supports their position says a lot more about the malleability of religion and scourge of political opportunism than it does about the merits of any particular viewpoint.
And, ok, granted, this is coming from someone who doesn’t believe Jesus is real, but man oh man it is frustrating to hear (from people purporting to be authorities on Jesus’ views) how Jesus is on both sides of the Occupy movement, and on both sides of the gay marriage issue and on both sides of tax code minutia, and on both sides of whether Pittsburgh should have dug a tunnel under the Allegheny River so the T can go from downtown to the stadiums and casino. Thankfully, most rational people I know realize that politicos will say anything to bring you to their side, up to and including the invocation of a higher power who you have to listen to in order to avoid eternal damnation.
Put another way, when someone says Jesus supports a particular political viewpoint, I think the proper reaction is to reject the injection of religion into the issue, rather than trying to argue back that Jesus actually felt differently.
